The Truth About Thinning Hair
The mechanism of thinning hair
Hair loss does not discriminate by age, gender, race or nationality. Men and women are equally affected both physically and psychologically from the traumatic experience of losing ones hair. Hair plays a significant role in our life. Hair is one of the first characteristics we notice upon meeting someone, and in our society a full head of hair is a representation of youth and vitality. Hair loss, especially when severe, often affects the lives of those afflicted. Severe thinning hair evokes not only cosmetic concerns, but can instill feelings of vulnerability, loss of self esteem, and project alterations in one's self-image.
Hair loss in both men and women can be attributed to a variety of factors including: genetics, alopecia, hormonal changes, medical treatments, to name a few.
Thinning Hair - Men
"...while at parties, I was so self-conscious of my thinning hair, I found myself gravitating toward a corner of the room. I found it nearly impossible to fit in, I looked different..."
95% of thinning hair in men is caused by Androgenetic Alopecia, resulting in a receding hairline and thinning of the hair at the crown of the head. This leaves a bald crown and ahorseshoe-like pattern of hair around the sides and back of the head. Androgenetic Alopecia is influenced by three factors: age, a genetic tendency towards baldness, and an over-abundance of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). High Levels of DHT in the hair follicle cause it to malfunction, and decrease the growth phase of the hair. Because of this,
the growth phase becomes shorter and shorter, and the hair does not have the ability to grow to its full length.
Thinning Hair - Women
"...hair loss in men is something that is taken for granted; men age and lose their hair. But for a woman, this is devastating! I tried everything to hide my hair loss. While my friends tell me not to worry, that it doesn't matter, I tell them it does matter. I don't feel attractive to men, much less to myself..."
Thinning hair in women usually begins around age 30, becoming more noticeable around the age of 40, and may possibly accelerate after menopause. Female hair loss usually incorporates an overall thinning - two hairs where five used to be - rather than a concentrated area of hair loss on top of the head, though women may have a receding hairline, too. Approximately 30 million American women suffer from the affects of hair loss. As in male pattern baldness, the hair follicles simply shut down, with hormones playing some role in the process. High levels of DHT in the hair follicles cause it to malfunction in women as well.merous interviewed media specials and most recently a guest artist on "Good Day Sacramento."
